How to Roast Coffee at Home

12:36:00 PM

What you will need:

- 150 g green coffee beans
- 2 medium sifters
- gram scale
- a timer ( for seconds)
- a baking sheet

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to roast coffee at home without buying any equipment or making any kind of investment is to roast it in your oven. If you are a beginner keep in mind that you need to know that the coffee bean should have a medium brown color, you may use as a sample an already roasted bean ( it will help you a lot!).  Keep in mind that the reference coffee will not remain the same as the days' pass, do not keep the sample coffee bean for too long.

Prepare your oven and preheat it to 250 - 260 C for at least 30 minutes. If you have a thermometer to make sure that the temperature is accurate that would help a lot. The rack should be in the middle of the oven and do not forget to use the van setting of the oven.

Use your scale now and weigh out 150 grams of the green coffee beans you bought. You will later see that coffee will lose a lot of percentage of weight after the roasting process. Spread the coffee beans on the baking sheet but not to the edges of the sheet.

After putting the pan in the oven start your timer immediately and also open a window! You will see the progress of the coffee in the first minutes of the roasting process. After 2 to 3 minutes the coffee beans will take a more intense green color, a little bit brighter. From 3 to 4 minutes coffee beans will start turning yellow. In this phase, you may open your oven and stir the sheet so you can bring the beans to the center. Repeat this step after one minute, check out that beans are turning darker.

From 7 to 8 minutes you will hear the first crack  (like the one from popcorns). Stir again the pan after 30 seconds. On the 9th minute, you will see a dramatic change in the color of the beans. After the fist crack beans will stop popping with intense and after that, you will hear the second crack.

Make sure to remove the pan from the oven before you believe that the process is over. Coffee beans keep the heat and continue to roast after you remove them from the oven. Holding the two sifters pour one coffee from the one sifter to the other for 4 minutes approximately until the coffee beans have a temperature that your hands may handle.

Your coffee is ready! You may also use it after 5 to 10 days. The flavor of coffee will evolve as the days pass.
